This case study focuses on lessons learned from a national drug shortage due to a global supplier and just in time delivery failure. In February, 2012, Manitoba Health received a letter from SANDOZ Canada Inc. stating that effective immediately they would be scaling back production of approximately 239 critical injectable medications that would affect the health sector in Manitoba and across Canada. This session outlines how the Office of Disaster Management handled this incident to ensure the stability of the drug inventory for the Health System of Manitoba, and what would steps would be implemented to prevent such a situation from occurring in the future. The key lessons learned relate to global supplier dependence and just in time delivery.

About the Speaker: Robert Munro is a Disaster Management Specialist of the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) within Manitoba Health. During his last seven years with ODM he has managed disasters such as provincial level flooding inclusive of health care facility evacuations, forest fire community evacuations, labor disruptions, drug shortage and the aftermath of an F5 Tornado. He has most recently been involved in Surge capacity projects for the health sector of Manitoba. Robert achieved a Masters Degree in Disaster and Emergency Management through Royal Roads University, and an ABCP designation from the Disaster Recovery Institute in 2006. Prior to his work with the department of Health he worked for the Canadian Red Cross as their Disaster Coordinator and was involved in 2004 Tsunami and the Hurricanes of 2004, most notorious was Hurricane Katrina. Robert is also a paramedic with 27 years of field and Emergency Medical Services Management experience.
