Are You Ready for a Major Port Strike?

An ongoing labor dispute could mean major disruptions and logistics challenges for organizations that rely on U.S. West Coast maritime ports. But according to a survey by the National Retail System, nearly half say they aren’t prepared for it!

When asked, “Are you prepared for a West Coast port strike?”:

  • Yes – 52%
  • No – 48%

Answering the question, “What contingency plans do you have in place?”:

  • Alternative ports – 38%
  • Increased inventory – 30%
  • Air freight – 2%
  • Other – 3%
  • Not sure/none – 27%

Here’s how much money one week of a strike could cost these companies:

  • $0-$10k – 11%
  • $10k-$100k – 32%
  • $100k-$250k – 27%
  • $250k-$500k – 15%
  • $500k-$1m – 8%
  • $1m+ – 5%

As always in this line of work, hope for the best — that the labor dispute gets resolved quickly — but plan for the worst!
