Interactive Map Creates New Ways to Track Hurricanes and Flooding

HurricaneThe National Hurricane Center has developed a new U.S. map that will give forecasters a more accurate way to issue warnings, making it clear that storm surges aren’t just a beachfront problem — they can go as far as 30 miles inland.

For the first time, the interactive map will link the coast from Texas to Maine. Using thousands of hypothetical hurricanes, forecasters factored in local coastal topography, levees, canals, and other structures to determine flooding.

The map lets users choose the strength size (from Category 1 to Category 5), then zoom in on locations to track flooding, which is measured at three, six and nine feet above ground.
