New FEMA Tool Gives Visual Map of Disasters and Prep

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/FEMA_-_35206_-_FEMA_Check_in_sign_in_Hawaii.jpgFEMA’s new data visualization tool is making use of the tons of raw data on past natural and man-made disasters it has accrued – all to encourage planning for future events.

Users can filter the data by state, county, or tribal nation to learn:

  • How many disaster declarations there have been, going back to 1953
  • What types of incident have been declared, and how many of each, and
  • The disaster assistance and preparedness grants FEMA has provided since 2005.

The website also lets users know how they can support their community’s emergency management efforts with links to volunteer programs, preparation steps, and additional downloadable data.
