Ms. America Speaks Up for Preparedness

TiaraThe next Ms. America has been crowned – and she’s using her position to speak out on preparedness and self-reliance in the face of national disasters.

Initially first runner up, Ms. Utah Julie Harman was bestowed the title of Ms. America – a pageant for single, divorced, married or widowed women 26 and older – after the previous winner had to relinquish the role for medical reasons.

Harman is using her position to put a spotlight on emergency preparedness: “The floods happening in southern Utah and all that’s going on in our nation with natural disasters is major news, and being prepared is something every single person needs to become.”

In videos and at charity events, she breaks down preparedness into five points: act responsibly, commit to a plan, decide, deploy, and encourage others. She intends to be a “preparedness intermediary” between the public and five community areas:

  • Businesses
  • Nonprofits
  • Educational institutions
  • Political leaders, and
  • Service providers.

Though not officially crowned until Sept. 29, Harman has already gotten started – by going on ride-alongs with the fire department and distributing information to the community.
