Severe weather caused flooding in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, and Indonesia, while the combination of a cyclone and a monsoon created massive flooding and landslides in Sri Lanka.
The Catastophe Recap for May details the destruction in Sri Lanka, where a monsoon and a tropical cyclone led to significant rainfall and resulting flooding, leading to the death of at least 213 people, and left more than 22,200 homes damaged or destroyed.
Flooding also affected other portions of the globe, including Canada, Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, and Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
In the U.S., severe weather swept through the central and eastern sections of the country, causing extensive damage resulting from large hail, straight-line winds, tornadoes and isolated flash flooding. Denver, CO, saw significant damage, as softball-sized hail led to insurance payouts of more than $1.4 billion USD statewide.
